September 19, 2024 – Quote for the Day:

“Paul is talking, throughout the book of Galatians, about slavery to the law. He tells us if we are convinced that the only way we can please and appease God is through our careful adherence to a system of rules and regulations we will be under a curse.

We will be cursed because we will forever be unable to determine whether God is happy with us.  If you ask a person who is a slave to legalistic religion whether or not they know that God has saved them, or whether they will be allowed to enter God’s kingdom of heaven when they did, their answer will be something like ‘I hope so.’ ‘I can’t be sure, it would be self-righteous for me to say I know for sure, but I keep on doing so I probably will make it. No one can know for sure, that’s why we have to keep on doing our best until the day we die.’ Some people are cursed, among other reasons, because they have no intimate relationship with God.  For them God is always on the prowl, always checking for rules infractions, always running them through spiritual security devices to see if they are getting away with something.  They can never be good enough, so they will seldom talk about their relationship with God.  How can anyone have an intimate relationship with God when they think that God is more concerned with code enforcement than he is with them as a person?
